Many photographers wonder what is the best lighting? Indoors or outdoors?
Strobes or continuous, incontinent or Fluorescent and I always say it makes no difference what type of lights is available to you as long as you know what to do with it.

In my 27 years of life as a fashion photographer I have tried almost every possible lighting scenarios you can imagine, from a 10 dollar home depot halogen light to a $10.000 studio lights
and I must say that I have managed to make some of the most interesting images with the cheapest lights

I still prefer the good old natural light over anything, no other lights can even come close to the most beautiful colors created by mother nature
Especially right before the sunset, or as we photographers call is the Magic hour!

No matter what type of light is going to light up your subject, the most crucial piece to a fantastic photography is your GLASS, by that I mean your lenses, and I have a few favorites, like my fixed 85mm 1.4 or even the 50mm 1.1 which would allow me to shoot in almost any lighting situation
Perhaps it is a good idea to have a small tripod with you at all times if you are planning to shoot at a low shutter and a higher aperture setting

I normally don't like to go any lower than 1/60th of a second if I am shooting a live subject, but I also like longer exposure for interiors with available indoor lights like shooting inside a mall, or a building.

As you know the longer the exposure the crisper and more defined your none moving subjects going to be, but all of your moving subjects become either blurry, or if the exposure is long enough they will completely disappear from your shots.

The possibilities are endless once you get a better grasp of your lighting as well as your camera's setting.
Film or digital, photography and photographers are only as good as their imaginations.

Photography has always been my passion and the biggest part of my life, and if anyone asked me for a few pointers, I'd say to them
1-Expand your horizons by looking at great master photographers work
2-Shoot something every day
3-Never settle for mediocre shots
4-Work with the best people
5-Think outside of the box
6-Own a few great lenses
7-Make images that you will be proud of even after you die
8-Create your own style
9-Be open to challenges
10-And finally, Understand your blacks, whites and midtones
and if you do that, you should be in a great shape and have some amazing images

A Little Information About The Big Show

You want to know my truth about shooting fashion shows? I don’t shoot them! Seriously. But I have shot them in the past, especially when I was first starting out in my career. The thing is, if you’re a fashion photographer, it’s going to come up. You’re going to get offered the gig at some point. Or a designer friend is going to need a favor and you won’t want to turn them down. Or maybe you really want to head in that direction with your career. For me, I’ve gotten to the place now where I will kindly refuse the gig because I just don’t enjoy shooting them.

I find them tedious and I hate standing around with a bunch of other photographers trying to get the “best shot” which ends up looking pretty much like the shots of the photographers standing to the left and right of me. I can’t help but feel that “paparazzi” thing either. The lighting is out of my control (and you know by now how much of a “light freak” I am.) The music is so loud sometimes, I can’t think. There’s no elbow room for error and it doesn’t pay that well. What’s the glory in all of it then? I don’t know. I would rather be sitting in the front row with a good view of the latest designs that will be strutting down the runway. I LOVE fashion design. Remember, I was originally going to become a fashion designer before I fell in love with photography. So for me, watching the show is way more fun than shooting it. BUT……..That’s just me! If you are planning on shooting a fashion show in the near future, here’s a few tips and links to some very useful posts and sites about the subject.

Cover your ass! Bring an extra camera body for two reasons: A. So you can mount two different lens to get two different shots of the same outfit. B. Murphy’s Law: if your primary camera for whatever reason on Earth decides not to work at the exact minute the show starts, you can switch to your back up with very minimal stressing out.

Depending on where you’re going to be standing, you’ll want to use a zoom lens with a range from between 24mm to 105mm. This is going to be a rare moment when I am actually going to advise using zoom lenses. They’re just more accommodating for this kind of shoot. Usually they place photographers at the end of the runway. You’ll want to get a full length shot of the model, a 3/4 shot, possibly a turning shot or back shot and hopefully a nice face shot, especially if the model’s wearing some great jewelry pieces or accessories.

Bring a mono-pod. Save your arm. You can also use it as a weapon if one of those other aforementioned photographers gets out of hand. Seriously, I’ve seen it happen. I am only joking, but I’ve seen photographers go at it with their mono-pods. Uh….in my opinion, a fashion show is not really that important to get into a blood bath over.

Make sure you have one of those on-camera flashes. With back up batteries. You can never count on their lighting set up.

Bring plenty of memory cards. They fill up fast!

Why not! Go ahead and shoot in auto-focus. I would.

I found this post on DPS had some really useful tips on shooting fashion shows: How to Shoot A Fashion Show. Fashion shows DO have a lot of energy. The music is loud and usually upbeat, the models are fun to watch, the clothes are usually more theatrical and dramatic. Here’s a link to the Spring 2009 Chanel Show. They did things a little different at this show but you can jump on to style.com’s site and check out any number of other designer shows. Personally, I just happen to enjoy watching the shows more than shooting them. But again, that’s just me. To each his own and that’s what makes the world go around! As I was searching the net looking to share a few interesting information about fashion and photography, I came across these guys fashion photography blogs

I found many of their advice and blogs very useful; here is a good example of one of them:

Fashionista.com I love these guys! I keep up on the latest trends in the fashion industry, which is SO important as a fashion photographer, with their latest posts. The thing I love about fashionista.com is their writers! This is not your average, run of the mill, dry and bland fashion news reporting. I do not know any of their staff but I can tell that they love their jobs, they LOVE fashion and they know their shit! I trust their input and their feedback. They weed out the useless boring updates and inform on only what really needs to be reported on.

Style.com Personally, folks, this site is where I find out what all the designers are doing. When I hear a stylist suggest a designer, say, Gareth Pugh, and I can’t bring a visual picture into my head of what Gareth has done, I go to Style.com, enter Gareth Pugh in the search window and then click on all of Gareth’s shows. It’s a very useful resource site to find any designer and their collections. Important when communicating with your stylists and editors.

Lightroom-Blog.com Okay, I know Sean McCormack through Twitter, but this guy runs the most comprehensive and informative site on lightroom out there. And he’s been doing it for a few years. While I save the real digital tech stuff to my pro team, don’t think for a minute that I turn a blind eye to all of it. Of course not, I sneak and read what I can on the digital medium. This site lays it out so well that even someone like me who sort of still resists digital can navigate my way around the site and find information that actually makes sense and helps me.

DPS.com Otherwise known as Digital Photography School. It’s a full blown information HEAVY site for all things digital photography. How to shoot better portraits, how to market your wedding photography business, how to use photoshop plug ins. I mean, you want to know about anything digital photography, go there. I visit this site just to learn MORE about my medium. It’s constantly about learning! It never ends. DPS.com is a great resource for learning!

Fashion.net This site has everything! It’s Super Information Fashion Highway. Seriously I don’t know why I’m listing them, they refuse to link to my blog, but hey, I’m being honest here. They have links upon links. To magazines, blogs, designers, books, modeling agencies, fashion weeks around the world, photo reps, etc. etc. They really are a great library of sites for fashion photography and it’s business.

X-Equals.com Another great site chock full of information on digital post production. Brandon covers everything from best tips for archiving to the latest photoshop feature and getting around the complexity of it all. Brandon is a virtual friend. We have never met but I wouldn’t endorse a site that I didn’t believe in as well. I visit plenty of websites, I don’t need to share them all.
